Granny Smith is probably one of the most well known apple tree varieties and remains a popular dessert apple. It is a hard, crisp, green apple with a refreshing taste that keeps well until March or April. The original Granny Smith was a chance seedling from New South Wales, Australia, and as such it really prefers a warmer climate to develop its full sweetness and flavour. In the U.K it remains a very useful cooking apple and it is often recommended by top chefs for pie making. If planted as an eating apple we only recommended growing this tree south of the Midlands.
